Sitting on a chabutra, amidst the sea of humanity attending the Ganga\u00a0arti<\/span>\u00a0organised by Ganga Seva Nidhi<\/a> at\u00a0Dashshwamedh<\/span>\u00a0ghat is a frail figure,\u00a0 religiously ringing the bell throughout the arti.\u00a0 She is no ordinary devotee; the octogenarian lady has been an inseparable part of the evening ritual, \u00a0occupying the same spot for the last two decades now.<\/span><\/p>\n

Usha’s Unbroken Ritual<\/h2>\n

\u00a0Usha, who migrated to Varanasi from Murshidabad, West Bengal, some decades ago with her husband, never misses what she calls the seva of Ganga ma (service to the River Ganga<\/a>). Even amid the most adverse conditions, her intense faith brings her to the Dashshwamedh ghat<\/a> every single evening.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the pandemic, when the world had come to a standstill, Usha continued with her undeterred devotion. She would walk down daily to be part of the Ganga\u00a0arti<\/span>\u00a0that had turned symbolic in the Covid phase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her saree-clad figure often rubs shoulders with celebrities, literally, as Ganga Arti is a must \u2013do experience for most of them, yet she remains unconcerned and calm. Untouched by the spectacle around her, the only concern for her is Ganga Ma. \u201cI feel immensely blissful every time I am here at the Ganga\u00a0arti<\/span>,\u201d she says in broken Hindi, but it is her eyes that are the biggest giveaway. The look of reverence in them makes others look up to her with respect. Mistaken for a saint, other devotees often are seen seeking her blessings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Usha, who lost her husband a few years back, lives with her son and his family. \u00a0\u201cWith a meagre means of living, this does not stop her from contributing\u00a0a token amount to our daan patra, which is really overwhelming for us,\u201d says Sushant Mishra<\/a>, President<\/a> of Ganga Seva Nidhi.<\/span><\/p>\n

How She Became Part of the Aarti<\/h2>\n

Her inclusion in the ritual of Ganga\u00a0arti<\/span>\u00a0was gradual, recalls Sushant.\u00a0 \u201cWe didn\u2019t know her personally at first, but when she started coming regularly, we made sure that this mother-like figure had a place in the Ganga\u00a0arti<\/span>. Later, while interacting with her, we got to know that\u00a0<\/span>she lives in the\u00a0<\/span>Dashshwamedh<\/span>\u00a0area. Now, no matter how high-profile guests are present in the arti,\u00a0<\/span>she<\/span>\u00a0gets her due place. \u00a0Even when the <\/span>PM<\/a> and President attended the Ganga\u00a0<\/span>arti<\/span>\u00a0in the past,\u00a0 she has always been there,\u00a0 chiming the bells,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n
